You now have less than 7 hours of wild speculation...

Any guesses?

My pick to win is Joe Malchow.

I base this guess on the empirical data that Bush tends to pick nominees with a highly disproportionate ratio of ego to actual insight/intelligence(e.g. Bolton, Ashcroft, Wolfowitz...).

Update: Apparently, it's this guy.

  1. I've heard from several sources that it is almost certainly Edith Brown Clement.

  2. I want to add that this comes from many leaks to the press. Washington is all abuzz and convinced.

Expect it to be 'officially' leaked before the evening news.

  4. Alot of blogs are now saying that Clement may have been a red herring intended to lead the Dems on a wild goose chase (possibly planned by Karl Rove, a snake in the grass).

  5. According to drudge, it's John Roberts.

  7. Some think that Roberts is a 1st nominee expected to be filibustered as an extremist so he can say to his base that he tried and then just slip in some pro-business judge. Of course, I don't think there is any merit to this theory that some have been pushing.

  8. In hindsight, Roberts was predictable. He's a poor man's Alberto Gonzalez, a political hack who's toed the party line his whole career while trying to maintain the image of a moderate. Slate has a great piece up on his gutless ruling just a week ago in Hamden v Rumsfeld.

  9. To expand on what I posted, I just thought I'd point out that Bush has had a history of promoting people for their adherence to his talking points and party line more than for actual results. So in that sense, Roberts was a poor-man's Gonzalez.
