News story
Primary Source, "Tufts' journal of conservative thought" printed this carol, sung to the tune of "O Come All Ye Faithful":
"O Come All Ye Black Folk
Boisterous yet Desirable
O come ye, O come ye to our University
Come and we will admit you,
Born in to oppression;
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
Fifty-two black freshman.
O Sing, gospel choirs,
We will accept your children,
No matter what your grades are, F's, D's, or G's,
Give them all privileged status; We will welcome all.
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
Fifty-two black freshman.
All come! Blacks, we need you,
Born into the ghetto.
O Jesus! We need you now to fill our racial quotas.
Descendants of Africa, with brown skin arriving:
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
O come let us accept them,
Fifty-two black freshman."

ReplyDeleteIt's kind of pathetic. I think that "we're sorry that we left ourselves open to being miscontrued"-type apologies are sometimes appropriate, but this one doesn't do the job, in my opinion. One should be able to criticize affirmative action without having to walk on eggshells and without having to worry about offending others' sensitivities, but I think that the first comment to the story you linked has it about right: "[s]aying that black students at Tufts are loud, stupid, and didn't deserve to be accepted is not 'an unapologetic critique of racial preferencing.'"
They want to be the Review--I trust Andrew Seal on this. They print this garbage. This is another good reason why we must ban the Review from campus.
ReplyDeleteUh, how do you expect to ban the review from campus?
ReplyDelete"Uh, how do you expect to ban the review from campus?"
ReplyDelete...I can't believe how cynical some people on this campus are...
The question is not about how one could do so, but rather why one would want to do so. I suspect that you're joking when you say you want to ban a publication, but, then again, you might not be. You don't need to. The Review can easily be challenged if you simply take the extra five minutes that are necessary to look at all of the errors in their arguments. It's like raising children: it's much better to explain to a child why he or she is wrong than it is to simply smack him or her across the face.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you take 5 minutes and point us to a few of the errors.
ReplyDeleteThen they'll be exposed as objectively wrong and fold up shop.
Or you can just call them "children," which is more like slapping a kid than explaining to him why he's wrong.
Banning the review is illegal.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, you don't have a right not to be offended.
This is Review-like. I detail their history here:

ReplyDeleteWho said anything about objectivity? Is an argument either error-free or objectively wrong? Don't be silly.
Or you can just call them "children," which is more like slapping a kid than explaining to him why he's wrong.
But they clearly do act like children.
I'd like one of you who advocate strong action against the Review to answer the following questions:
ReplyDelete1. Would you support a ban on handing out a non-sanctioned publication on college property?
2. Would you prevent anyone associated with the Dartmouth Review from registering for classes - effectively preventing them from being a student?
3. Do you think that the latest cover is bad enough to bring reviewers before the COS for vioation of the principle of community?
The Review's opponents are quick to ask the college to "take action" against the paper, but are never specific on what action should be taken. If you want the Reviewers dragged out on the green and shot - have the balls to say so. If you want Dartmouth just to denounce the paper - say that too.
And believe me, the Review would relish the fight if action was taken against their members.
I love it when anonymous commenters challenge other people to have "balls."
ReplyDeleteI make no claim to "balls" in posting this, so please don't point out the obvious.
People aren't specific about what action must be taken because they haven't thought about it. They want a result (fewer instances of speech they consider offensive) and leave it up to the college to consider the means. People demand results all of the time without giving much thought to the means that would be required. End the war, fix the economy, etc.
LoL, are you kidding me, Andrew? I'm Black and I don' think this is racist. It's hilarious, that's what it is. It's affirmative action--plain and simple--in verse and set to a song. It's about admiting Blacks who might have poor grades than whites, or asians, or indians. Just because you believe it's a sound attempt to level the playing field, right historical wrongs, injustices, whatever, (as I do in some circumstances!) has nothing to do with this carol being racist.
ReplyDeleteChill.
